Barefoot waterskiing starts in early spring for Laurel's family.
Two weeks ago there was ice on the lake. Last week there were still patches of snow on the ground. Tonight, my husband and our second son, Adam, are at the lake barefoot waterskiing. They've been footing for a week and a half now.
Call me a wimp (they do), but I won't venture into the backyard with bare feet until the grass turns green. They get the boat out and pull each other through water that's just this side of frozen. Barefooting is a sport for a special kind of athlete. You have to have the ability to take the pain of being pulled barefoot behind a boat going 45 miles per hour. My son went to Ron Scarpa's barefooting school over spring break. Ron Scarpa is THE name in the sport. To get ready for the trip, Adam had his younger brother spray his feet with a power washer to get used to the feeling of water pounding his feet after so many months in shoes. It's amazing what someone will do for the love a sport.
